Be Sickle Smart

Be Enlightened, Educated, and Empowered

The Be Sickle Smart program helps raise awareness about a serious health issue for people living with transfusions and sickle cell disease: iron overload. The Be Sickle Smart program is a community-based sickle cell disease program that sponsors education and iron overload screening events in cities throughout the country. At these events, people:

  • Meet others in their community who are living with sickle cell disease
  • Learn about iron overload and how to get screened
  • Have a free serum ferritin screening to see if they are at risk for iron overload or receive a free serum ferritin test voucher if they want to be screened later

Attend a Be Sickle Smart Event

Join celebrity medical and diet expert and creator of the 50 Million Pound Challenge Dr. Ian Smith at a Be Sickle Smart Empowerment Event near you.  The closest opportunity for Indianapolis, will be on Saturday, July 17, 2010 in Chicago, IL.  Novartis has contacted the Martin Center, Inc. regarding their willingness to sponsor a group of 48 adult patients/clients, on a first come first served basis.  At these community education and screening events, Dr. Ian Smith will speak on sickle cell disease and iron overload. Take home a free Be Sickle Smart tool kit and meet Dr. Ian Smith.
