Who we are

Martin Center is a trusted nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease. Originally founded in 1969 by Rev. Boniface Hardin, O.S.B., and Dr. Raymond Pierce, our organization has evolved over the years while remaining rooted in holistic, community-centered care. In 2012, we adopted the name Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative to more clearly reflect our mission.

Today, we provide essential services—ranging from support groups and transportation assistance to education and emergency aid—to meet the needs of those living with Sickle Cell Disease. We also work in close collaboration with healthcare providers, schools, policymakers, and caregivers to raise awareness, promote early intervention, and empower our community through education.

Sickle Cell Disease disproportionately affects African American, Arab, Asian, and Latino populations. That’s why our work goes beyond support—it’s also about advocacy, equity, and building a future where no one faces this journey alone.

As public funding continues to decrease, community partnership is more vital than ever. Your support helps us reduce barriers today and create lasting change for tomorrow.

“After my son was diagnosed, we didn’t know where to turn. Martin Center helped us understand what Sickle Cell meant and how we could support him. They’ve been with us every step of the way.”
